JSC “Vostochny Port,” the largest Russian specialized port with the high-tech coal transshipment and a member of the coal port holding “Managing Port Company,” installed stationary devices for the automated monitoring of air emissions.

Sensors located at the boundaries of the port's sanitary protection zones will quickly detect any emissions resulting from the coal handling operations.

This measure is an additional tool for monitoring the environment. To control the use of dust suppression equipment and compliance with the coal handling procedures, a video surveillance system is run, and the data is communicated to Rosprirodnadzor Pacific Maritime Administration.

“Vostochny Port” monitors the air, industrial waters, and Vrangel Bay waters on a regular basis with the help of its own accredited environmental laboratory. Indicators of the samples tested for the suspended solids (dust) content are below the maximum permissible levels,” says Alexei Kalachev, Director of the Environmental Protection of JSC “Vostochny Port.”

The new equipment was installed as part of the comprehensive environmental program implemented by JSC “Vostochny Port” and “Managing Port Company, LLC” under the agreement made with the Russian Federation Ministry of Transport, Rosprirodnadzor, Rosmorport and the Administration of Primorsky Region.

Rosprirodnadzor Pacific Maritime Administration and the Primorsky Region Directorate of the Federal Service have approved the coordinates of the facility for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring.

Within the framework of its integrated environmental program for the transition to enclosed coal handling technologies, “Vostochny Port” is installing additional process equipment for dust removal and dust suppression, including 20-meters-high dust protection barriers. The total investment in the implementation of the environmental protection plan and the retrofitting of the handling equipment, which is run in the port existing production facilities, shall represent over 1.4 billion rubles.
